My main research interests may be categorized as:

• Biogeochemistry of mercury under varying redox conditions in soils and waters with
special emphasis on the linkage with organic carbon, sulfur and iron
• Coordination chemistry of trace metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb) in natural organic matter
• Interactions between organic pollutants and natural organic matter
• Acid-base reactions and particle surface charge generation in organic rich soils

In collaboration with other groups at Umeå University, ETH Zürich and ESRF Grenoble, state-of-the-art spectroscopic, species-specific isotope dilution and isotope fractionation techniques are used to determine electronic and molecular structures as well as chemical species of relevance and importance in soils, sediments and waters. The ultimate goal is to determine conditions and factors in control of mobility, bioavailability and potential toxicity of trace elements.
