Research done by PhD-students is a major contribution to the department. The department gives postgraduate education the subject areas, forest vegetation ecology, forest soils and water, forest management and silviculture among others. PhD-projects often include elements of both field and laboratory work. Most of the fieldwork is done in boreal forest but also in the subarctic and for example in other countries such as Ethiopia, New Zealand and USA. Click on PhD-students below and get more information about ongoing PhD-project.
The PhD-education is typically four years which includes postgraduate courses on for example functioning of boreal forest ecosystem and scientific writing. The thesis typically includes four papers of which at least one is published during the four year.

"I came to Umeå and the department of Forest Ecology and Management to do my research because it is the leading department within the field of biogeochemistry of boreal forests. So far, I enjoy it!" Jakob Schelker, PhD-student.

Research School - Sustainable Management and Utilization of Forests
The Faculty of Forest Sciences at SLU has initiated this Research School addressing the growing demand of raw materials and services from our forests and the necessity of sustainable management of the forest resources in a changing climate. The coordination and activities of the research school are financially supported by a grant from FORMAS. Eight to ten PhDs or Licentiates in forest management are expected within the next five years. Available positions will be announced during spring 2009.
